Later that year she married Davis Phinney, also a world-class cyclist. The following year, Carpenter-Phinney prepared to compete in the women’s cycling event at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It would be the first time women would be competing in the sport, and Carpenter was, along with her fellow American Rebecca Twigg, favored to win a medal. The race was close from start to finish, as Twigg and Carpenter-Phinney traded leads several times over the course of the race. Finally, trailing Twigg by several meters with 200 meters to go, Carpenter-Phinney pushed her bike in a final sprint, edging her wheels slightly in front of Twigg’s to cross the finish line first.
Boycott of the 1980 Moscow games, Blazejowski signed a contract later that year to play for the New Jersey Gems in the newly formed Women’s Basketball League (WBL). Blazejowski commanded the highest salary of all WBL players, but the league was short-lived, folding after only one season. Blazejowski left professional basketball after the demise of the WBL, and she took a job as a promotional representative for a major athletic shoe company. In 1990, she was hired by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to work in its Consumer Products Group, where she stayed until 1997, when she found out that the NBA was involved in the formation of a brand-new basketball league for women.
In 1977, Carpenter entered her first two national cycling competitions and won them both. That same year she took a silver medal in her first international race, and in 1978, she won two more national titles. By 1983, Carpenter was one of the top cyclists in the world. In eight years of competitive racing, she had won 12 titles, including four national championships and one world championship. Later that year she married Davis Phinney, also a world-class cyclist.
