This problem is probably the theft of weaner pigs, involving some of the farm managers and staff. Large and complex farm systems can have various problems with theft of pigs or pig feed or equipment, either by outside persons entering the farms, or by farm staff, or by groups that perform farm tasks on a contract basis.

10 Case Study The farmer operated a large breeder, nursery and finisher farm system, in a region with many other pig farms. The farm site had a variety of buildings for each phase of production. The breeder pigs and young piglets received an intermittent vaccination programme. The farmer sometimes purchased weaner and breeder pigs from other nearby farms and placed them into the herd to increase production numbers. The farmer noticed many depressed pigs and an increase in mortality in the nursery areas.

6i). Close inspection indicated that many of these pigs showed rough hair coats, very poor growth rates, with many runt pigs. There were occasional cases of harsh breathing, occasional cases of diarrhoea, but no consistent clinical pattern. The hospital pens in the nursery had many sick pigs, which did not recover and died. In most batches, the problems seemed to be in pigs at 4–10 weeks old, with 10–20% of the batches affected. In occasional cases, the pigs had a yellow to orange colour to their body (jaundice).
