These advantages helped reptiles move into habitats where the water-breeding amphibians could not survive. Vertebrates exhibit all three of the chordate characteristics at some point during their lives.

It's calling out a love song to find a mate because it discovered the perfect little pond in which to raise tadpoles into toads. This intricate and ancient history of evolution and family relationships among amphibians and reptiles has been painstakingly reconstructed by an untold number of paleontologists working around the world for several hundred years. By using temperature variations in their surroundings, or by remaining cold when they do not need to move, reptiles can save considerable amounts of energy compared to endothermic animals of the same size. [72] A crocodile needs from a tenth to a fifth of the food necessary for a lion of the same weight and can live half a year without eating. [73] Lower food requirements and adaptive metabolisms allow reptiles to dominate the animal life in regions where net calorie availability is too low to sustain large-bodied mammals and birds.
