So the terrible-tempered Toad is forced to take other steps--magical and mysterious--to solve the latest crisis in the Persever household." However, some large animal like a rhino follows him home. The book I was trying to remember is Myekos Gift by Kay Haugaard. It’s a story that even reluctant readers can love, about good-hearted children and adults who grow in compassion and understanding. You will think I am absolutely nutty to remember this, but the sidekick says something like, "Let me borrow some of your fabulous night cream, Leeshy, the kind that smells like strawberries." However, good books can find a review and I expect this to open up more.

On one camping stop she meets a boy (she's aged around 16 at this point) with dark hair and has her first kiss. The story caught the attention of Boys Quest Editor Marilyn Edwards. Read this in the early 1970's, but it was a library book so could have been published earlier. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [1914]. 30626; PQ4; GL; TDB. [Originally titled Bransford in Arcadia; or, The Little Eohippus. The book depicts the whole horse-show world very darkly: The wealthy owners often don't care about the ponies or their well-being, riders cheat by lying about their ages so they can ride in younger divisions, ponies are given drugs to mask injuries or behavior problems so they can compete when they shouldn't (I think this is where I first encountered the term "bute up"), the workers are often injured by the ponies, and there was a general suggestion of exploitative class divisions between the wealthy horse owners and the people who worked in the barns.

It wasn’t until years later that I discovered that this book was part of a series written by Peggy Parish, a woman better known for her series of picture books featuring a certain maid who has issues understanding word play. Sju dagar och sju natter is probably Sweden’s first whodunit and is still a good read. High-frequency word and alphabet books introduce students to the sounds and most common words in Spanish. Two of the series have a female protagonist. I think her parents buy matching clothing for the girl and her doll.

Let’s catch up with our children, catch up with our schools, catch up with this world around us. Thanks so much! (and, obviously, there's no need to post my question now...) Your book stumper sounds like a cross between Miss Twiggley's Tree and Alexander and the Magic Mouse. They start on the difficult search to find another house to rent and Elizabeth (the youngest), who is visited by a make-believe horse when she is alone, insists that they follow the instructions given to her by the horse.

I can't find a detailed description of the book online, but what I found looks to be a match. It is a funny, lighthearted childrens book. Orphaned Laura has been left with many questions about her past – it's made her suspicious of taking answers from the adults in her life at face value. His alarmed parents give him a firm lecture about taking such risks, but playfully then suggest that since he's done it, he might as well contact Mcgee to give his report, which proves to crack the case.

The kicker was that the "robbers" were actually entertainers preparing to perform at a bank opening. What I do remember: The book was large, had a mostly-green color illustration on the cover, and had a green spine and back. The reprint cover is totally different to the original. If the figurehead at the bottom of the pond was wearing a necklace of wooden beads with diamonds hidden inside, this is the book! Dorothy Simpson, The Honest Dollar. The only poem remembered had a line which read "I do not like you Mr. (or Dr.) Snell, I do not like you very well".
