Capital Mysteries is a series of mystery novels for young readers written by Ron Roy. This is an educational site containing reading lists and essays on great mysteries, mainly of the pre-1980 era. It is very similar to Zilpha Snyder's The Changeling in some ways and you might like to read that too. The key to enter the bunker is mercury, hidden in things like a golf club or a ring. This book has a classic murder mystery feel to it, with plenty of surprises for both the characters and the reader.

Private detective Sam Spade was invented by Dashiell Hammett. I believe it was set in Sweden, and the main character was a boy. It was definitely a kids book, but not a picture book. I'm looking for a picture book from the late 1960's or early 1970's, about the secret adventures of a doll and a dog. If this is from a Thornton Burgess book-they don't seem to know about it at the Burgess Museum in Sandwich, MA. This one featured a girl named Penny, whose dad had disappeared.

There may be even more but these are all I found. His first book, Timpetill (1937) (translated as Trouble at Timpetill), is an ingenious story about a town of children whose parents get angry, and who leave them en masse, to take care of themselves.

There were letters and hidden keys to locate within the illustrations. It's been driving me crazy for years and no one in my family remembers the book. Perfect for: Kids who like historical fiction. Soon, they are travelling with him on his wagon, and I remember that he had lots of magical stuff.

So it looks like a pretty good match. Lot's of people remember this book fondly, though the treasure scandal marred it's reputation temporarily (not the fault of the author). I seem to think the word "dunes" was invovled somehow. The cover shows the series� fascination with the latest technology. Blossom's Shop by Barbara Euphan Todd. The suggestion of one of Todd's later books led me to check out her bibliography.

I don't know if this is a kid's book or a teen book or whatever because I can only recall some details. Each kid has a hobby that nobody else cares about or else considers a nuisance, so they set up their own community. Every animal he enounters leads him to a bigger animal until he finds a grizzly bear. The Mice are also a creative conceit, amusing and inventive.
